Liverpool: What To Do When You Visit Liverpool

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

For the past year now Liverpool, England has been the European Capital of Culture city. Certainly if you were to visit this wonderful city not just this year but next there will be plenty for you to do and see during your time there. In fact this city after London offers more galleries and museums per capita than any other city in the UK.

But it isn’t just the city of Liverpool which has much to offer its visitors there are plenty of things to do and see in the surrounding areas. In this article we take a look at some of the attractions which when you stay in Liverpool you may find interesting.

Liverpool is of course famous for the Beatles and you can trace much of their history here. Situated in Albert Dock, Liverpool is the Beatles Story where one gets transported back to the very start of this groups life. It shows the visitors what happened when four young guys from this city became world famous. But not only does it look at their music but at their childhood lives including, of course, how the group was formed.

Other places along with the Beatles Story that should not be missed during a visit to the Culture Capital of Europe are as follows:-

1. Merseyside Maritime Museum Again situated in the historic Albert Dock this museum houses a wide array of items reflecting the importance of the sea to this city. Including how important both Liverpool and its docks were during World War II and how members of the merchant navy coped with life on the high seas. You also get to view what the Titanic, Lusitania and Forgotten Empress ships were like.

2. Speke Hall If you would like to learn more about what life was like back in the 15th Century then a visit to this attraction should be arranged. Speke Hall is a famous half-timbered building and was originally built during the 1490’s. As you wander through it you will learn about the lives and times of those who have lived in it throughout the last five hundred or so years.

3. Knowsley Safari Park This was opened by the 18th Earl of Derby in 1971. Naturally, the main attraction is the safari park itself but there are many other things to do as well. There is also the Reptile House, Children’s Farm and the Parrot and Sea Lion shows as well.

4. Western Approaches This attraction is located under the streets of Liverpool and provides you with an insight into what life was like during the 1940’s. Here is where the people were under constant pressure to protect England from invasion and ensure that the Battle of the Atlantic was won by us. This is a truly dramatic way to see how we coped during those troubled times.

When you next stay in Liverpool, make sure you find the best Liverpool hotels here.

La Lodola, old farmhouse in Foiano della Chiana

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

La Lodola is an old farmhouse in Foiano della Chiana, in Tuscany, which dates back to the 1750’s.
Its restoration, carried out in several phases, brought life back to a decadent structure, reestablishing in it the atmosphere of the past.
The owners, who are antique dealers, chose to give the interior of the house a rather unusual look, ranging from classical to eclectic, according to the different and suggestive environments of the various rooms.
In particular, each bedroom has a personality of its own, with an equally unique and refined bathroom.
One musn’t be surprised if, upon returning for a second visit, the furniture in the rooms has changed, because many of the objects and furnituer is for sale.
The house, which overlooks a beautiful valley in the heart of the Valdichiana area, has an optimal location, as it is easy to reach and not far from many interesting places to visit.
What’s more, it is also possible to reach every corner of the world 24 hours a day, by connecting one’s computer to the LAN internet network available in each bedroom.
The guest room I, the only one found on the ground floor, is painted in inviting shades of amber and powder blue.
Brightness floods the environment from its windows and doors, illuminating the wrought iron four-poster canopy bed.
A mirror hangs over the small fireplace, reflecting the intimate feeling that the room holds.
The guest room II: this bold, bright room has a late nineteenth-century style, both in its decoration and its furniture.
With lively green-striped walls and a large, elegant walnut-framed bed, this spacious room has an incredibly refreshing and comfortable atmosphere.
Although smaller than the others, the guest room III is in no way less enchanting.
One relishes its furnishings, which include a comfortable queen-size bed and red and black lacquered furniture.
The buff walls and moss green ceiling help to create the intimate atmosphere in this special and restful place.
The suite (guest room IV) is composed of two levels and overlooks the garden, the swimming pool, and the valley beyond.
On the upper level, the sand-colored walls meet an intricately hand-painted grey cornice.
On the first floor, the bathroom is panelled in black marble and has red drapes painted on the walls, a motif which is repeated above in an alcove, which houses a ninetheenth-century bath tub, next to the bed.
The room has a very luxurious decor, yet it retains a feeling of comfort.
With its cheerful, bright atmosphere, this room (guest room V) gives immediately gives one a sense calm and tranquility.
With its refreshing yellow tones and its eighteenth-century style furnishings, one’s stay in this peaceful environment is marked by a feeling of relax and repose.

Aberdeen: Ideas for When You Visit Aberdeen

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

The city of Aberdeen has been home to mankind for at least 8,000 years. There are lots of things to keep you occupied in the city there are plenty of sights and attractions that you can also enjoy in the nearby Scottish countryside if you prefer. We’re going to look at some of the city’s many attractions and you can enjoy these whether you’re in the city for business or pleasure.

Most of the city’s attractions are based in and around Union Street, right in the center of everything. Along with the Union Street Bridge built in the 19th Century or if the weather isn’t being kind to you, you can go inside the Aberdeen Art Gallery instead. You could easily while away a few hours wandering around the gallery’s halls viewing the gallery’s collection of art from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Many visitors also flock to Marischal College, which is close to the art gallery. This granite structure housed between modern office buildings is the second largest of its kind in the world. But inside you have the chance to explore the Marischal Museum which displays a range of weird and wonderful items. These exhibits have been donated by both graduates and friends of graduates of the college.

In nearby King’s College you will find the college chapel which for over five centuries was used daily as a place of worship. However, nowadays it is used to display a varied collection of historical artifacts, some of which date back over 400 years. Plus in Old Aberdeen where King’s College is located is St Machar’s Cathedral again dating back to the 15th Century and which overlooks both the River Don and Seaton Park.

When it comes to visiting Aberdeen one should make time to visit the city’s historic harbor area. This is home to the Maritime Museum where you can explore to learn more about how closely the city is linked to the ocean. But also here you will find Provost Ross’s House which is believed to be the oldest remaining building in this city.

Just a short walk from the harbor is Footdee an old fishing village. You’ll notice that the 19th century fishermen’s cottages all face away from the sea. This was to ensure that they were protected against the storms that would come in a batter the shoreline.
